A great number of clients and patients come into treatment reporting that they have a lack of motivation. This can be due to a variety of factors, and it is rather obvious to therapists, even when clients don’t bring up the topic.

According to this description of motivational therapy and motivational interviewing, motivation plays a key role in the way clients deal with all their issues and conditions, from anxiety and depression to addiction and eating disorders. The approach of motivational therapy can be helpful to provide incentive to clients, and that’s a good start.

Once the patient becomes motivated, though, it’s important for the therapist to slowly step back as the client gets to the place where they can be self-motivated. This is the best way for the client to develop the interest and dedication that is necessary to have a successful therapy outcome. How can this process be initiated?

Why Clients Lack Motivation

Working with client motivation requires some understanding of what condition or experience might be causing it to manifest. Renee Skedel, LPC, lists ten reasons why clients might need help developing motivation in this article from Choosing Therapy. They include:

- difficulty adapting to change
- chronic stress
- a feeling of being overwhelmed
- a lack of engaging or interesting activities doing a lot for others, but not much for oneself

- burnout, e.g. emotional, physical, and/or cognitive fatigue
- perfectionistic
- dealing with stressful events (death, divorce, separation from employment, etc.)

- avoiding difficult feelings and depression

Once we come to know the reason for a client’s lack of motivation, we can begin to address the issues that underlie it. How, though, can we quickly get a client to discover things about themselves that might be contributing to their lack of motivation? Will they be able to talk about them right off the top of their heads?

Go to the Source with Hypnotherapy

Talking through the process of tying lack of motivation to a client’s underlying conditions and bringing about positive results can be a slow and arduous endeavor. It’s not impossible to get there with talk therapy, particularly if an approach that addresses motivation can be employed. However, there’s a faster and highly effective way that will accelerate the healing process.

Most of the time, lack of motivation is a manifestation of a subconscious or unconscious belief that a person has. Somewhere in life, a message such as “Why bother?” or “If I’m successful, people won’t like me” could have become ingrained into a client’s psyche. Or, a rebellious response to an aggressive authority figure that took place in one’s teens could have become a habit that persists well into adulthood.

Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy can take a client directly from their current feelings about being unmotivated back to the underlying source of the behavior. Hypnotherapy facilitates communication between the unconscious and subconscious parts of the mind, enabling connections to be made.

In hypnotherapy, clients are guided through age regression, which allows them to go back to times in the past when the same or similar feelings were true for them.

Here’s an example.
After being placed into a relaxed state of hypnosis, a client might identify a time when s/he felt shame because of procrastinating on a project, or even a simple task.

Once a current situation is identified, the client can sense the emotions surrounding the incident, whether they are shame, anger, sadness, or something else, and express them. Once this is done, continuing in the state of hypnosis, the client can be guided back to earlier times in life when they had similar feelings.

As the client releases the emotions associated with these past experiences, the age regression will reveal the source of their current behavior. This happens when they identify the “old conclusions,” or the negative ideas they might have developed about him/herself as a result of this past experience.

There is usually a second regression performed during the session to make the patterns clear. Then, the work of healing the client’s old impressions of the self can begin. Inner child work and soul parts retrieval, as well as titration of certain emotions and NLP techniques to work with addictions, give the clients tools that will help them make different choices. They will also get a chance to re-frame their old perceptions, and create new and affirming ones.

The process of Heart-Centered Hypnotherapy is powerful and profound. Clients will become more fully aware of the reasons for their behavior, and welcome the opportunity to change it so they can lead more productive lives.

Finding the reasons behind a lack of motivation helps clients to find the incentive they need to make the most out of their therapy. Hypnotherapy can accelerate their progress, and make the work of the therapist much easier. How can you learn hypnotherapy? Does it take a long time to become certified?
